Bad Day for Franchisees: Dunkin’ Donuts and 7-Eleven Closed by the Health Department

Here’s some output from our friends at CDPH:

Dunkin’ Donuts, 7-Eleven Shut By City Health Department
Health Violations Unacceptable

In two unrelated incidents this afternoon, Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) inspectors shut down a Dunkin’ Donuts and a 7-Eleven.

Dunkin’ Donuts, 222 W. Merchandise Mart Plaza, was shut down after Health Department inspectors discovered an ongoing infestation of fruit flies through the doughnut shop.

Inspectors had warned Dunkin’ Donuts management about the situation on September 9 and said they would be back to re-inspect in a week. Today’s inspection showed no compliance.

7-Eleven, 1524 W. Taylor, was shut down when CDPH inspectors discovered waste water backing up from a floor drain. The store also was cited for a faulty hot dog warmer that was failing to hold cooked hot dogs and other meat products at the required 140 degrees or hotter (the unit and the food were found to be at 130 degrees). About 10 pounds of hot dogs and other products were ordered discarded.

7-Eleven also received a citation for an infestation of live ants discovered in a rear storage area.

Each establishment will remain closed until it is back in compliance with the city’s health regulations and has passed re-inspection.

The enforcement actions were the 176th and 177th times in 2008 that Health Department inspectors have shut a food establishment for violations of the Chicago Health Code. In addition to being closed down, representatives of both establishments will have to explain themselves at administrative hearings next month and pay fines expected to total $1,750 (7-Eleven) and $750 (Dunkin’ Donuts).

Chicagoans who believe that a doughnut shop, convenience store or food establishment is operating in an unsafe manner are encouraged to dial 311 and report it.
