The Chicago Sun-Times has a piece about the temporary de-obstruction of the IBM Building while the old Sun-Times building has been razed and before the Trumpalicious Tower is raised. Here’s an excerpt:
The IBM building at 330 N. Wabash has been there for decades, but never before have we seen famed architect Mies Van Der Rohe’s last and largest American building in full view.
“They building, the beauty, is expressed through its structure,” said former Sun-Times architecture critic Lee Bey. “Here you get to see that beauty expressed, with the right angles and just the clarity of the design altogether.”
Bey knows better than many the opportunity we have for a few short months. The classic Van Der Rohe can be seen without the rarely lauded Sun-Times building in its foreground, and before the Trump Tower behemoth obstructs most of the view.
“This gives us a chance to see the building as Mies saw it, as Mies thought of it,” Bey said. “And you’ll see the things that make modernist architecture and this building absolutely great.”
The picture is one I took from inside the IBM Building looking down onto the demolition of the newspaper abomination.
