CDPH: Cockroaches Crawl at Beer Bistro While Rats Defecate at Cy’s Crab House

There's so much motion in the big city.

Shut Down by City Health Dept.
Health Violations Unacceptable

A Near West Side pub was shut down today when Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) inspectors found live cockroaches, fruit flies, and wastewater leaking onto the floor of a basement kitchen.

The Beer Bistro, 1061 W. Madison, also was cited for failing to supply soap and hand towels at a hand washing sink designated for food handlers.

Today’s visit by CDPH sanitarians was a routine, unannounced inspection.

The Beer Bistro will remain closed until it has corrected all violations and passed re-inspection.

The enforcement action was the 118th time in 2009 that Health Department inspectors have shut an establishment for food safety violations.

Representatives of The Beer Bistro are scheduled to appear at an administrative hearing on August 20 and pay a fine expected to total $1,750.

Chicagoans who believe that a restaurant or other food establishment is operating in an unsafe manner are encouraged to report it by calling 311 or logging onto www.cityofchicago.org.

Also remaining closed today is Cy’s Crabhouse Sports Bar and Grill, 3819 N. Ashland, which was shut down yesterday when CDPH inspectors found food at unsafe temperatures and numerous rat feces throughout the restaurant.
