Liquor, Sandwich Valves Cut Off

Here’s a dispatch from the Chicago Department of Public Health:

South Side Sandwich Shop
Shut By City Health Department
Health Code Violations Will Not Be Tolerated

A South Side sandwich shop was ordered closed today after Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) inspectors discovered critical violations of the City Health Code.

Orbit Submarine, 8061 S. Cottage Grove, was shut down after Health Department inspectors discovered mouse feces in the kitchen.

The shop’s management also was cited for an outside garbage container that was overflowing with trash, as well as a poorly maintained grease box.

Also shut down by CDPH today was Hareer Food & Liquors, 5452 S. Halsted, after inspectors discovered a leaking toilet in the employee restroom, rat feces near the store’s front door, and a poorly maintained outside garbage area.

The enforcement actions were the 82nd and 83rd times in 2008 that Health Department inspectors have shut a food establishment for violations of the Chicago Health Code.

Representatives of both businesses will have to explain themselves at administrative hearings in July and pay fines expected to total $1,750 (Hareer) and $1,000 (Orbit).

Chicagoans who believe that a restaurant or other food establishment is operating in an unsafe manner are encouraged to dial 311 and report it.
