So I’ve started to collect a new series of images: Working Clocks.
Remember when every bank, most restaurants, and tons of other business had prominent clocks for everyone to see? Now that pretty much every cell phone, Blackberry, computer, and every other personal device has the current time, no new businesses have public clocks and the old businesses have less interest in maintaining them.
Working clocks are dying objects, and that’s why I’m out to document them.
First one up: the clock on the steeple of St. John Cantius Church on Carpenter St. between Fry St. and Chicago Ave., towering over the Chicago Academy for the Arts. It was 2:27 PM, and I was walking to the train from work.
