I’ve always been attracted, since my 1970s, to the idea of a vacation slide show, with a Kodak carousel in living room darkness and screen-light. If you can handle it, re-watch Don Draper explain the carousel and the surprising corrosiveness of nostalgia:
My wife and I just took a trip to Abu Dhabi with a day drive to Dubai. Here’s my slide show:
Britanny & Tim Life™, Abu Dhabi, October 2022
The impetus for this trip was to visit SL’s relative Brittany, who moved to Abu Dhabi during the pandemic to be a teacher. We saw her new apartment with her partner, Tim. We also drove by her current and former school and saw the gym that Tim owns.
SL Birthday, Abu Dhabi, October 2022
One of the reasons for the timing of the trip was to coincide with SL’s birthday. We had a great day at museums, the hotel hooked her up balloon-style, and we had dinner with Brittany and Tim.
Alserkal Avenue, Dubai, October 2022
I always want to see any & all Arte Agora, so they took us here.
Tea at Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi, October 2022
This place was wild. Gold everywhere, including gold flakes in my cappucino.
Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dahbi, October 2022
What an amazing place of worship.
Louvre Abu Dhabi, October 2022
As is true for so many structures in Abu Dhabi, the Louvre is so dynamic and fresh and future-feeling. Great approach to the collection– attempting to make coherence out of all artistic expression across the world.
Amazing show that traces decades of devotion to modern art.
Buildings & Structures, Abu Dhabi & Dubai, October 2022
I took a lotta pictures, often from moving taxis. Also: I’ve seen many tall buildings. Seeing the tallest was a scale that blew my mind– 162 stories.
