Bad news for the nascent hipster baked good industry, as recounted from a press release issued by the Chicago Department of Public Health:
Health Violations Unacceptable
A North Side bakery was ordered closed today after Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) inspectors discovered a critical violation of the City Health Code.
Bleeding Heart Bakery, 1955 W. Belmont, was shut down after CDPH inspectors found two clogged sinks: a three-compartment sink in the kitchen and a hand washing sink for employees.
The bakery also was cited for not having a certified food manager on duty, and for an outside garbage container that was overstuffed.
Today’s inspection was a routine, unannounced inspection.
The bakery will remain closed until its management has taken corrective action and passed re-inspection.
The enforcement action was the 35th time in 2009 that Health Department inspectors have shut down a food establishment.
Representatives of Bleeding Heart Bakery will have to explain themselves at an administrative hearing on March 19 and pay a fine expected to total $1,250.
Chicagoans who believe that a bakery or other food establishment is operating in an unsafe manner are encouraged to dial 311 and report it.
