Dunkin’ Donuts in the Loop
Shut By City Health Department
Health Code Violations Will Not Be Tolerated
A Dunkin’ Donuts at 201 W. Madison was shut down this afternoon when
Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) inspectors discovered an
ongoing infestation of fruit flies.
Inspectors had cited Dunkin’ Donuts for fruit flies a week ago (June 8)
and informed managers that they would be back to re-inspect within a
week. Today’s inspection showed no compliance, which automatically
increased the severity of the offense from “serious” to “critical”.
Dozens of fruit flies were found in both the kitchen and in the dining area.
CDPH inspectors also cited the doughnut shop for a poorly maintained
and overflowing outside garbage receptacle, and for gaps in the front
door that could allow access to rodents and insects.
Dunkin’ Donuts will remain closed until it has eliminated the
infestation, addressed the other violations and passed re-inspection.
The enforcement action was the 105th time in 2009 that CDPH inspectors have shut a food establishment for health violations.
Representatives of Dunkin’ Donuts will have to explain themselves at an
administrative hearing scheduled for July 23 and pay a fine expected to
total $1,000.
Chicagoans who believe that a doughnut shop or other food establishment
is operating in an unsafe manner are encouraged to dial 311 and report
it.
