Mouse Feces Found Throughout the Facility
A North Side bagel shop remains closed today after being shut down Friday by Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) inspectors.
Einstein Bros. Bagels, 5318 N. Clark, was ordered closed when CDPH inspectors found mouse feces in the kitchen, dining room and throughout the facility.
Representatives of Einstein Bros. will have to explain themselves at a City of Chicago administrative hearing set for March 26 and pay a fine of $500.
The shut-down was the 40th time in 2009 that CDPH has suspended the business license of a food establishment.
Chicagoans who believe that a bagel shop or any other licensed food establishment is operating in an unsafe manner are encouraged to call 311 and report it.
In an unrelated action, the Art Zone Cafe, 3238 W. Bryn Mawr, remains closed after CDPH inspectors shut it down on Friday after finding mouse feces throughout the establishment, including on top of cookware. Additionally, Art Zone was issued a fine for violating Chicago's Clean Indoor Air Ordinance after inspectors found evidence of smoking (butts in an ashtray) on premises.
