Language Used in Scoring Cattle

tl;dr:

Here’s a video I made of a cattle show judge, capturing the language he used to score:

This September I finally made it to the Wyandot County Fair in Ohio. Shawn-Laree’s mother was born and raised on Fort Royal Farm in Cary, Ohio, and this is the county fair that has been central to their family for generations. Here’s a photo essay I did on the farm a while back:

And here’s a video essay:

I love county fairs (here are photo essays on  the DuPage County Fair from 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014), so I was glad I was able to get there this year.

Here’s all of my photos from my time there, with some special attention to the amazing Fun House, photos of every flower entered in the fair (it’s a lot) as well as a personal history of tractors in the county as told by Bill Coppler.

It was pretty amazing.

What was absolutely new to me, however, was the Cattle Show. Lots of our relatives were showing their cattle, including these two snugglers:

As I listened to the judge as he narrated his scores for each of the categories, I was struck by the specialized language he used.

He was a very serious, studious person:

He spoke with great authority and explained in great detail his decision-making on each and every animal.  So I recorded a lot of his narratives and put them together into a compilation. Enjoy!
