My Newspaper Collection

I have a collection of 110 newspapers, and today I took some time to organize and document them. Here’s the complete list, with date, headline, newspaper, topic, and provenance.

The collection is pretty New York Times-heavy, as I have been a home subscriber of that publication since about 1991. My normal practice has been to save the entire front section of the paper I’m interested in. My basic criteria is 6-column headlines, which is very rare for the NYT, which is not prone to screaming.

I have pretty complete records of the Persian Gulf War of January and February 1991, the fall of the Soviet Union in late 1991, the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995, and some stray JFK assassination stuff I picked up from a friend’s basement.

I have the front sections of every New York Times from the September 12 – 24, 2001, and a goodly amount of stray special editions, elections, inaugurations, and other noteworthy events.

Here’s a set of photos:

Howto:

There are two products that are instrumental to maintaining this collection:

I am able to get all 110 items, each of them individually sealed, into 2 of these cases. Very compact and hoarder-free collection!

Long live newspapers.
