New Street Cleaning Regulations in CB6 — Watch Yerself

There’s little in city life that drives people more crazy than getting parking tickets due to obscure, seemingly random parking regulations. Here’s a dispatch from the NYC Department of Transportation about parking in CB6:

Street Cleaning Regulations Suspended in Parts of Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens and Other Areas West of Court Street Starting August 18 as DOT Starts the Third Phase of Sign-Replacement Project

New Regulations Will Take Effect in Parts of Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill and Gowanus East of Court Street Starting August 25

Effective Monday, August 18, Street Cleaning/Alternate Side Parking (ASP) regulations will be temporarily suspended in parts of Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens and other areas west of Court Street in Brooklyn’s Community Board 6 for three to five weeks as the Department of Transportation (DOT) installs 1,600 signs with new, reduced street-cleaning regulations. This is the third in a four-phase project to change signs throughout the community board.

In the Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill and Gowanus sections of Community Board 6 that are east of Court Street, where the second phase of this sign replacement project started on July 7 and is now complete, the 2,100 newly posted ASP regulations will become enforceable on Monday, August 25, giving residents two weeks to adjust to the new rules.

In many cases, residential street-cleaning parking restrictions are being reduced from three-hour intervals to just 90 minutes, and from twice a week to just once a week, to ease parking for local residents. On commercial corridors, some streets will now be cleaned more often and regulations will be better coordinated to help ensure some curbside parking for local shoppers. The new rules were established by the Department of Sanitation.

Street Cleaning Regulations will be suspended within the following borders starting Monday, August 18, and lasting an estimated three to five weeks:

  • North: Atlantic Avenue (included) from Columbia Street to Court Street.
  • East: Court Street (not included) from Atlantic Avenue to Hamilton Avenue.
  • South: Hamilton Avenue (not included) from Court Street to Van Brunt Street.
  • West: Columbia Street (included) from Atlantic Avenue to Degraw Street; Degraw Street (included) from Columbia to Van Brunt Street; Van Brunt Street from Degraw to Hamilton.

The new regulations will take effect once sign changes are complete in the entire area. The changes do not affect 8:00 am to 6:00 pm parking rules or meter regulations, or any other parking rules that are not Street Cleaning Regulations.

The DOT will give advance notification before enforcement resumes, and the public is encouraged to check the DOT’s Web site at www.nyc.gov/dot and call 311 regularly.

On Monday, August 25, new ASP regulations will take effect within the following borders of Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill and Gowanus:

  • North: Wyckoff Street (not included) from Court Street to 3rd Avenue; Saint Mark’s Place (not included) from 3rd Avenue to 4th Avenue.
  • East: 4th Avenue (included) from Saint Mark’s Place to 15th Street.
  • South: 15th Street (not included) from 4th Avenue to Hamilton Avenue; Hamilton Avenue (not included) from 15th Street to Court Street.
  • West: Court Street (included) from Hamilton Avenue to Atlantic Avenue.

After a survey of the entire project area, the total number of signs to be changed has been determined to be 8,000 total. Following this segment, the fourth and final phase will begin in the Red Hook neighborhood of Community Board 6.
