Here’s some pretty good news for accessibility in Charlotte from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Park and Recreation Department:
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP BUILD MECKLENBURG’S FIRST “ACCESSIBLE PLAYGROUND”
Charlotte, NC — For those turned away from volunteering for the ABC-TV Show Extreme Makeover in Charlotte–and even for those who weren’t–Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation suggests a great community project: Help build the “Accessible Playground” for all children, now called Race Playce.
The Park and Recreation Department and Partners for Parks seek thousands of volunteers to help build the county’s first fully accessible playground project in Nevin Park, 6000 Statesville Road. This will be a play area without barriers, accessible for all children regardless of their abilities, a place where all children can play together. The playground was designed by children who worked with a professional designer. It has a NASCAR racing theme.
Construction shifts will be scheduled each day, September 29-October 5, 2008, 8am–12:30pm, 12noon–5:30pm, and 5:00pm–until(?). Skilled and unskilled volunteers are needed for hospitality, first aid, children’s activities and actual construction of the playground. Mecklenburg Park and Recreation invites all kinds of people and groups to help with this effort that we call “Hearts and Hands.” We seek help from:
- Individuals
- Families
- Churches
- Companies
- Social Groups
- Fraternities and Sororities
- Sport Teams
This is a great opportunity for groups to do “team building” and to help with an important project for the community. For more information and to sign up for volunteer shifts, contact Volunteer Coordinator Lori Saylor at 704336-5478 or lori.saylor@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov .
