Last week when I traveled with David Schalliol on the South Side to document his Isolated Building Studies, we came across St. Lawrence Parish. Really quite stunning to see this configuration of buildings– Church, school, rectory– a set that I am so familiar with– in such a state of disrepair and neglect. The parish was closed by the archdiocese in 2002.
On the other hand, having grown up in and near the projects on the North Side of Pittsburgh, the concept of architectural neglect is not foreign to me.
Things change. Needs of people and groups of people change. Land use changes. Nothing is forever. God bless us all.
