I’ve got a story over on the Examiner about a lawsuit seeking to recover $2.6 in a Ponzi scheme here in Chicago. The location of the Ponzi mastermind is currently prison somewhere, but it used to be 1500 N. Cleveland in Lincoln Park.
Street crime is covered to near exhaustion by the media, and should be. It’s important to know where crimes occur. But white collar crime is nearly never covered as a local story, with people who live and work — and conduct their criminal activity — in actual buildings near you.
Reporters should endeavor to place addresses in stories about white collar crime — it’s relevant. I am more interested in knowing that someone near me stole millions of dollars than I am knowing about every telephone threat (whatever that is).
